Screwtape Chapter 10
I wanted to to do this post on The Screwtape Letters because this particular chapter was very…well good. It talked about how the “troughs” or low points in our lives tend to be times we are most susceptible to the Devil’s schemes and plans. That he is most likely to pounce when we have gotten to Rock Bottom. There is also a wonderful idea in this chapter that I wanted to show you :
“I know we have one many a soul through pleasure. All the same, it is His invention, not ours. He made the pleasures: All our research so far has not enabled us to produce one. All we can do is encourage the humans to take pleasures which our Enemy has produced, at times, or in ways, or in degrees, which he has forbidden.”
Isn’t that incredible? That notion? The Devil is not able to create pleasure. All pleasure, despite how we use it or what we make of it is from God. All the enemy can do is amplify that pleasure to a place God has not designed for us. God created sex. I’ve always loved that thought. It’s when we take it outside of his will and his intentions that it becomes sinful. God created wine. It is when we become drunk on it that we become guilty of shaming that pleasure. Anyway, I think this passage was a wonderful lesson for me to know that when Im down in the dumps and not at my highest point, that I am a more risky target for him. Strength and perseverance. Thats what I need.
